Investigating Gender Equality in Banks Operating In Chittagong, Bangladesh
Abstract
This paper investigates the gender gap in the banking sector in Chittagong, Bangladesh,
by focusing on the disparities in the salary distribution, promotional frequency, workplace
opportunities, and work-life balance. Despite the increasing participation of women in the
financial sectors, the results reveal that patriarchal beliefs continue to limit the career
advancement of women. A sample size of 153 employees from different public and private banks
participated in a structured survey that collected data, which was then analyzed using
univariate, bivariate, and regression analysis. The results highlight notable differences,
including women reporting facing gender bias, more difficulties juggling work and household
responsibilities, and fewer prospects for advancement in their workplace. According to the
results found in this study, women experience stress at work and unequal career paths as a result
of patriarchal norms influencing their workplace progression. The study ends with
recommendations for legislative measures to address the gender gap in the industry, such as
mentorship programs, inclusive advancement standards, and fair job sharing.
