Prevalence & Associate Factors of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus among Pregnant Women in Chittagong: A Hospital-Based Cross- Sectional Study
Abstract
Background: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common condition
associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity, is increasing. For both the mother and her
child, this has additional long-term health implications. In index pregnancy, maternal and infant
morbidity is minimized if the problem is correctly diagnosed and treated.
Objective: This study objective was to assess the prevalence and associate factors of GDM
among the pregnant women in Chattogram, Bangladesh.
Methods: A total of 281 participants aged between 18 years to 45 years old and were in their
third trimester of their pregnancy were sampled. For the selection of participants, convenient
sampling was used. Systematic random sampling was used to select potential participants. We
performed statistical analysis using SPSS. Possible associations and statistical significance were
measured using bivariate analysis, p-values <0.005 were regarded as statistically significant at
the 95% confidence range.
Results: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus is 10.7%. Participated in the study were
mostly aged above 26 years of age (43.8%). The study revealed that the maximum number of
participants (60%) are from urban areas(p<0.005). GDM was somehow associated with pre-
eclampsia status (p=0.044), history of abortion (p=0.057). The result of the study has some
additional findings which shows participants from urban area & proper education status are
found more knowledgeable.
Conclusion: This study shows that the prevalence of GDM in Chattogram is quite closer to the
prevalence of GDM nationwide in Bangladesh, which demands the immediate attention and
action of policymakers, medical professionals, public health experts, and the general public.
Interventions that are appropriately designed and context-specific are required for the early
detection and prevention of GDM.
